Vehicles seized over dangerous driving on beach

- MELANIE EARLEY

Two vehicles were seized at Karioitahi Beach over the Easter weekend after reports of dangerous driving.

Inspector Joe Hunter said police were called to the beach over Easter because of reports of two vehicles ‘‘driving dangerously’’.

‘‘The motorists’ behaviour was of particular concern to police given the beach was very busy . . . with families enjoying their long weekend.’’

Karioitahi Beach is one of only two beaches in the Auckland region listed as a designated road, the other being Muriwai in West Auckland. Hunter said while this meant vehicles could be on the beach, normal road rules applied.

The two vehicles were quickly spotted by police and were seized after being used to do burnouts.

Hunter said the incident at Karoitahi Beach followed other recent incidents of poor or illegal driving reported across the Counties Manukau area in recent weeks. Earlier this month, a 23-year-old man was arrested in Karaka after police responded to a car doing burnouts.

The man fled on foot when police arrived, Hunter said, but was eventually arrested after allegedly kicking and spitting at officers. ‘‘He not only had his vehicle impounded, but also faces charges including sustained loss of traction and assaults police.’’

In Pukekohe, police found a dirt bike that was involved in ‘‘anti-social behaviour’’ around Pukekohe’s central business district last month.

‘‘This bike had been creating a number of issues for businesses and the public,’’ Hunter said. ‘‘Thanks to incident reports and CCTV we were able to locate the bike of interest and impound it.’’

In all the incidents, information from the public assisted police, Hunter said.
