Which seed?
Achieving a beautiful easy-care lawn starts with choosing the seed that’s right for your soil, climate, and how your lawn is to be used.
A good lawn is never just one grass species, but a blend of varieties tailored to a specific end use. Lawns that contain deep rooted grasses such as tall fescue are the most drought tolerant. A shady lawn needs a balance of shade tolerant grasses.
The finest fescues offer smooth good looks but will generally take a little longer to grow, although these high quality lawns can be surprisingly easycare once established. The most hardwearing lawns for play areas usually feature a mix of rye grasses and fine fescues or browntop, a fine hill country grass that tolerates both drought and cold.
Rye grass mixed with clover delivers a quick fuss-free cover for tough places where smooth looks are not top priority. Perennial rye grass grows fast to out-compete weeds while clover fixes its own nitrogen. Clover flowers are a valuable source of food for bees.
