My first experience of Puanga was moving, incredible and resounded with the atmosphere and history of Te Awa o Whanganui – the Whanganui River. Having moved to Whanganui eighteen months ago I had heard about this festival and understood it to be the western North Island’s equivalent to Matariki, the celebration of the Māori New Year.
