Kaik­oura is a coastal town in the north­ern part of the South Is­land with a pop­u­la­tion of 3,860. Renowned for it’s ish­ing and sea- life, vis­i­tors will de­light in see­ing marine mam­mals such as the Dusky dol­phin or Sperm whale at play. In Maori folk­lore, Kaik­oura is where the hero Maui placed his foot to steady him­self while he “ ished- up” the North Is­land.
