INNOVATION AWARD

This Ponsonby Rd gem is so charmingly casual, so unassuming and unpretentious, you almost don’t expect the food to wow you as much as it does. But chef and co-owner Tom Hishon (above) turns out consistently excellent dishes, with a focus on seasonality, sustainability and provenance of ingredients – a peak out the window while washing your hands in the upstairs loo reveals beehives and a herb garden perched on the roof. The small, well-thought-out and well-executed menu changes regularly and makes good use of local ingredients, with an autumn iteration featuring the likes of line-caught fish with rainbow chard, beach spinach, kumara and macadamia, and potato dumplings with fungi, bull kelp and celery. The drinks list is varied and interesting, with more than enough wines by the glass to please most palates as well as some excellent beers and cocktails, and service is friendly and informed. 118 Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby, ph: 09-378 7979, orphanskitchen.co.nz Brunch Wed-sun, dinner Tues-sat; larger plates $31 IN BRIEF Laidback vibes and exciting food by people who care
