This slick offering from the Skycity stable delivers a citified take on the Italian canon – think marble, dark wood and glossy surfaces rather than checked tablecloths and rosycheeked nonnas. Tucked away in the Skycity Grand Hotel, it’s a great option for groups, with plenty of room to kick back and enjoy a long lunch or dinner in the true Italian style. The kitchen is overseen by globetrotting chef Sean Connolly (above), who has an affinity for the nuances of Italian cuisine that’s quite at odds with his Yorkshire roots. Highlights include the pappardelle with pea and duck ragu – perfectly al dente handmade pasta; rich, unctuous ragu – and the silky panna cotta, given a modern twist with a syrup of Campari and blood orange. That’s amore. Skycity Grand Hotel, 90 Federal St, City, ph: 09-363 7030, gustoatthe Breakfast, lunch & dinner 7 days; mains $20-$47 IN BRIEF Smart city Italian with soul
