Housed in Cam­bridge’s land­mark vin­tage post of­fice, Alpino is run by a Kiwi-ital­ian cou­ple who bring a touch of Euro­pean hos­pi­tal­ity to the Waikato. Noel Ci­madom (above with wife and co-owner Kim Ci­madom) is from Bres­sanone in the far north of Italy, and his menu re­flects the culi­nary tra­di­tions of his home re­gion, com­bin­ing French, Ger­man and Ital­ian flavours. The food is fresh and colour­ful, mak­ing the best use of sea­sonal Waikato in­gre­di­ents. Re­cent high­lights in­cluded ag­nolotti alle melan­zane – home­made pasta filled with ri­cotta and but­ter­nut pump­kin served with a burnt egg­plant but­ter sauce – and veni­son carpac­cio with Jerusalem ar­ti­choke crisps, pick­led beet­root, aged parme­san and ri­cotta tartufo mousse.
