Housed in a for­mer shop on Lyt­tel­ton’s main drag, Free­mans Din­ing Room is an un­pre­ten­tious, friendly lo­cal that’s se­ri­ous about the qual­ity of its food and wine. Ev­ery­thing is made on site us­ing high-qual­ity in­gre­di­ents – house-cured Akaroa sal­mon is joined by red pep­per puree and creme fraiche in a sim­ple, sub­tly de­li­cious starter, while tortellini of con­fit chicken in a blue cheese sauce, dot­ted with hazel­nuts and crispy pancetta, nails the win­ter com­fort food brief.
