14/20 Boats bob­bing close by, hearty por­tions of hon­est food and a wine list that en­ter­tains and in­forms – all are rea­sons to re­lax at Quay on the Whangarei Town Basin. In this mod­ern bistro, much of the meat comes from the own­ers’ farm, in­clud­ing the tasty High­gate Hill Farm coarse pork sausage. Seafood is also cel­e­brated, as ev­i­denced in a barely pan-kissed tuna dish with miso may­on­naise and braised kelp (above). The wine list is a jour­nal of experiences of co-owner Lloyd Rooney, with lo­cal drops given as much promi­nence as those from abroad, and the floor crew are youth­ful and friendly.
