The Good Health team share how they’ve each im­proved their own well­be­ing this year

Con­fes­sion time – my kryp­tonite is cheese! Put a cheese plat­ter with some crack­ers in front of me and I’m a happy cam­per. Un­luck­ily for me, this in­dul­gence has no doubt con­tributed to my el­e­vated choles­terol lev­els.

Af­ter be­ing told by the doc­tor I needed to lower my choles­terol, a dis­cus­sion pre­cip­i­tated by an un­wanted short stay in hospi­tal af­ter suf­fer­ing from chest pain, I knew I needed to change.

Not want­ing to un­dergo an­other tread­mill stress test, or ex­pose my top half as a hand­ful of ECG elec­trodes got slapped on my chest or model an­other un­flat­ter­ing hospi­tal gown in front of strangers, I’ve been forced to take a long, hard look at my hap­haz­ard ap­proach to­wards diet and ex­er­cise.

As we share an of­fice with a food mag­a­zine, temp­ta­tion ar­rives daily. Ig­nor­ing the siren call of th­ese kneeweak­en­ers has been a test of one’s met­tle, but I’m learn­ing ab­sti­nence has its re­wards. There’s sat­is­fac­tion to be found in mak­ing food tasty without adding fat. I’m opt­ing for lean pro­tein, and I’ve re­dis­cov­ered my love of fresh fruit, veg­eta­bles and herbs. I’ve be­come the fruit pusher in my work pod (although ad­vo­cat­ing the de­li­cious prop­er­ties of a man­darin when there’s a new Tim-Tam flavour on of­fer is a hard sell!). I’m also ex­er­cis­ing every day, even though it’s some­times the last thing I feel like do­ing. Hap­pily, I’ve lost a lit­tle weight and I’m sleep­ing bet­ter. I haven’t had an­other blood test to check my choles­terol yet but have every hope it’s head­ing in the right di­rec­tion.
