Hamilton bowlers win indoor titles
Possibility became reality when Hamilton Workingmen’s Club won all three Clubs New Zealand Indoor Bowls North Island Championship events.
The championship was hosted in Te Awamutu by Waipa Workingman’s Club.
A former resident and indoor bowls player from Kihikihi, Georghie Sirbu skipped Ashleigh Tanfield to win the pairs title (14-2) in a one-sided game against Carol Lovell and Lyn Martin representing Otorohanga Club.
The pair conceded defeat after seven of the scheduled nine ends had been contested.
In the semi-finals, Lovell/martin eliminated Roger Andrew and Dale Stanton (Horshoe Club) 10-5, while Sirbu/tanfield ousted fellow Hamilton WMC members Malcolm Chandler (holder of 12 titles) and John Steer 9-5.
Paul and Marlene Walker (Waipa WMC) qualified but were eliminated in the round of last eight by the runner-up pair.
The triples final was a nail-biter with the scores tied 7-7 after the regulation nine ends had been played.
On the extra end, Steve Flaszynski, Terry Boyle and Bob Lord (HWMC) applied pressure from the first bowl to take the honours. The opportunity was there for Sue Hackett, Kath Arvidson and Barbara Gosnell (Castlecliff Club) to draw or move the jack to their advantage but it was not to be.
In the semifinals, Flasynki’s team denied Chandler a shot at his 13th title when they defeated his team of Kelly O’neill and Clare Ginnane (both 10 time title holders) 9-5 and the Castlecliff trio defeated David Hamilton, Ross Hamilton and Nigel Parker from the Taradale Club 11-1.
Both Waipa teams (Mary Southey, David Moore, Dave Southey, and Arthur Pitcher, Olga Barnes, Marion Britton) qualified for post section play.
The HWMC four led 5-2, only to see Rotorua lead 7-5 at the end of seven. The scores were tied 7-7 after eight ends and Flasynski made it two titles for the weekend by scoring the all-important one shot on end nine.
In the semi-finals, Flaszynski’s team defeated Dave Wark, Ruth Roberts, Shirley Wark and Vic Gunko (Kamo Club) 13-5, while Bryant’s team accounted for Ian Hancock, Peter Fisher, Warren Davis and Christine Rankin (Otorohanga Club).
ASB Stadium at Te Awamutu Events Centre was full to capacity with indoor bowlers for the Clubs New Zealand Indoor Bowls North Island Championship.
