Wanted: Superheroes for Relay For Life

Hamilton News - - COMMUNITY -

Relay For Life returns to Hamilton in 2019 and the Cancer Society is challenging people to become a superhero for the day — wearing undies outside of clothing is optional.

The inspiring community event, where team members take turns walking or running around a track, gives people the chance to celebrate cancer survivors and carers; remember loved ones lost to cancer; and fight back by raising awareness and funds to support the work of the Cancer Society.

Catriona Findlay, fundraising manager for the Cancer Society, says Relay For Life participants who turn out for the event at Claudelands on March 30 can expect a festival-like atmosphere and a real sense of community spirit.

“With 12 hours of non-stop, live entertainment and music, this is a great opportunity for friends, families and co-workers to enjoy a fun day out while making a difference for people affected by cancer.”

Relay For Life is the secondlargest fundraising event on Cancer Society’s calendar, behind Daffodil Day. Ms Findlay says money raised by relay ‘superheroes’ will stay in the community and directly benefit people in Waikato and Bay of Plenty.

“As a community-funded charity, fundraising events like Relay For Life ensure we can continue to provide free support to people diagnosed with cancer in our community, and their families.

“From emotional support and advocacy from a supportive care nurse who can help them navigate the medical system, to practical support services like transport to treatment, frozen meals and accommodation for people travelling long distances for treatment at Waikato Hospital; the work that we do in the community can make all the difference for someone during what can be a stressful time for them and their family.”

Relay For Life 2019 is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Registrations are now open at www.relayforlife.org.nz.
