School’s sausage sizzle has musical backing

- KELLEY TANTAU

Seven children from Hamilton West School’s Room 20 will serve a sausage sizzle to raise funds for the recording of a song the class has recorded for an international album.

The musical album is an initiative of the Zimbabwe Rural Schools Library Trust, a charitable organisation with the aim to enable rural children in developing countries access reading material.

‘‘Getting funds from sponsors has not been easy, so we thought we can get the ball rolling,’’ said 12-year-old Ropa Kunaka, one of the pupils involved.

‘‘At least we need to prove our commitment to make the donors realise how serious we are.’’

The album will feature established and upcoming musicians from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Zimbabwe.

The project has been hampered by a lack of financial resources, and the trust is appealing to wellwishers to donate towards the recording of Room 20’s song, said the trust’s New Zealand chair Driden Kunaka.

‘‘We’ve got a quotation of $1200 from a local recording studio. The album is planned for launch in October.

‘‘We will do the best we can to ensure that the effort made by the children of Room 20 in coming up with a magnificent song is not put to waste.

‘‘Their goal in investing time to exercise their artistic minds should be realised,’’ Kunaka said.

The sausage sizzle takes place at Pak N Save Clarence Street on October 1.
