Putting the ‘ooh’ back in zoo
Visitors to Hamilton Zoo could be waking up to the sound of wild animals if its master plan is given the green light.
Glamping is one of the many proposed projects outlined in the zoo’s plan, but the unique overnight experience will come at a cost.
Those costs were yet to be determined and form part of the zoo’s proposed expansion now out for public consultation.
Hamilton City Council hoped people would share their thoughts on the zoo master plan via submissions which close May 18.
The comments will be compiled and presented to the Community and Services Committee on June 27.
Councillor Angela O’Leary has led the expedition to expand the zoo, and glamping is one of her favourite aspects of the proposal.
Glamping combines glamour and camping, and will involve around 16 luxury tent sites overlooking the Savannah.
O’Leary said the tents will be in-keeping with an authentic safari encounter but will include home comforts.
The site will be in the new Waterhole Camp adjacent to the home of the zoo’s giraffes and zebras.
An overnight stay would include meals and behind-thescenes visits with the animals.
‘‘What an experience,’’ O’Leary said. ‘‘I’d go and spend a night there just to have an adventure in our own backyard.’’
While the price of staying overnight at the zoo has not been determined, the indicative cost for all projects associated with the zoo’s expansion is $15.3 million.
The proposed additions are likely to increase zoo admission.
‘‘There is a possibility of that happening,’’ O’Leary said. ‘‘But people understand that the entry fee contributes to the zoo.’’
If the master plan is accepted, decisions on funding any of the projects and initiatives will be dis- cussed as part of the council’s next 10-Year Plan.
O’Leary said funding options could include corporate sponsorship, Government conservations and tourism.
‘‘It’s been successful when we’ve done things like the Hamilton Gardens.’’
