HOSPITAL STAFF

The condition has improved, but it is not yet known ifWaikato Hospital’s staffing situation has been nursed back to full health. Late last week, hospital bosses were scrambling to fill about 30 spaces for nurses on night shift due to ‘‘general illness’’ taking a toll. A source who did not want to be named said some staff were feeling unsafe and, if the shortage continued, lives could be at risk.

ON-FIELD DEATH

A Hamilton man died during a senior rugby match. Hamilton Marist president Mike Honiss identified the player as Geoff Toni. Toni was playing in the Presidents Grade for Hamilton Marist, who were playing Leamington Rugby Club in Cambridge. Honiss said Toni had been playing for the Presidents Grade in theWaikato for over a decade.

RURAL BACHELOR

The Fieldays Rural Bachelor of the Year finalists have been found. Fieldays staff have been scouring NZ and Australia for eight eligible rural bachelors but they won’t reveal the identities June 12. Fieldays at Mystery Creek starts on June 14-17.

LOTTO WINNER

A Lotto player is $1 million richer after Saturday night’s draw. The winning ticket was sold at Parkwood Supervalue in Hamilton.
