Our ageing population

-

There are around 20,000 people aged 65+ years in Hamilton City, and they account for 12 per cent of the city’s population.

This number will increase to around 30,000 around 2028, when they will account for around 15 per cent of the population, to almost 38,000 by 2038, when they will account for just under 18 per cent of the population.

It will then increase to more than 41,000 by 2043, when they will account for a bit over 18 per cent of the population.

Radius Care managing director Brien Cree said Glaisdale was set to bring a new standard of elderly care to Hamilton in a suburb that was developing quickly.

‘‘When we were approached, we looked at the growth in the area and decided it would be a good opportunity for us. We’re pleased to be here,’’ Cree said.

‘‘We have strived for balance that gives residents the feeling of independent living but with the support they need from staff while ensuring all comforts are in place to make Glaisdale a home away from home.’’

Radius Glaisdale is a new take on the traditional ‘‘institutionalised’’ rest home.

Oaklands Group chief executive Ian Patton, who developed the site and building, said Glaisdale has been future-proofed.

It’s been fully equipped with modern amenities like wi-fi and LED lights and has the latest security equipment. It has several intimate lounges and bedrooms are private with spacious ensuites.

‘‘We’ve used a range of quality, durable materials that will ensure the building still looks good in 30 years and beyond,’’ Patton said.

‘‘We think it will stand the test of time.’’
