Manx Society marks Tynwald Day

- ROBYN BRYANT

Manx Societies were formed here in New Zealand many, many years ago.

The word Manx, is the given name for the Isle of Man people, originating from a small island in the middle of the Irish Sea and quite a number of these Manx people immigrated to New Zealand either for a better lifestyle or through marriage.

Manx Societies were formed with the view to meet and encourage friendships among Manx people and to retain the Manx culture.

Tynwald Day, the National Day for the Isle of Man, is celebrated by our society here in New Zealand plus our society also meets on other occasions for social gatherings, both here and in Auckland.

The Waikato region amalgamated with Auckland some 25 years ago, however this society is still strongly supported today by Manx People both locally and surrounding districts in and around the Waikato, even extending to the Bay of Plenty.

Regretfully though, many Manx people or descendants in the Waikato are not aware of the existence of our society and we are looking to reach out to these people by sharing who we are and what we represent.

We are holding our annual Hamilton luncheon on Saturday, September 9, at The Combined Returned Services Club, Rostrevor Street, Hamilton.

Our society would like to extend an invitation to this luncheon to Manx people or descendants in the hope that they will join with us and learn more about our society.

Our luncheon will include a guest speaker, Alec Calderwood who is from the Hamilton Caledonian Society, speaking to us on the history and tradition of the ‘Haggis’.

Arrival time is 11.30am for mix and mingle with lunch being served at 12.30pm. The cost for the luncheon is $25.00 per person and consists of a buffet menu.

Numbers are necessary for catering purposes and prepayment is a requirement.
