New voices for Rivertones

- ENTERTAINMENT

‘‘We have a very strong four-part harmony tradition in this area.’’

Waikato four-part harmony group the Waikato Rivertones chorus opened its doors to new voices earlier this month.

The group of 50 women, aged from teens and up, come from throughout the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and King Country and competed in the Sweet Adelines International Convention in Las Vegas last October.

Directors Kate Sinclair and Lynn Jamieson will be starting on some new music and are looking forward to welcoming new members over the coming months - especially women who are able to sing in the lower range.

The chorus is wanting to attract new voices, and to allow women and girls to experience ‘‘ringing’’ chords, publicity coordinator Adrienne Windsor said.

This is achieved when an overtone is produced, creating the sound of a fifth note.

‘‘We have a very strong fourpart harmony tradition in this area. Many schools already have choruses and quartets, so we’d like to see those girls come along.’’

The Rivertones are still welcoming keen female singers of all ages to go along to their regular Monday night rehearsals at Marian’s school hall in Clyde Street to see the chorus in action, enjoy some music – and try harmony singing for themselves.

Being able to read music is helpful but definitely not a prerequisite.
