New shop has one-off antiques

- BY LINDA HALL

A treasure shop has popped up in Havelock North.

It’s called The Garden Place and it’s full of vintage and antique treasures sourced by its owners, Chad and Peter Gibbs.

The couple went on a treasure search around England to antique fairs and reclamation yards hunting out their booty to bring back to Hawke’s Bay.

Every item in this pop-up shop is unique.

“I don’t have shelves of the same item out the back in a storeroom,” laughs Chad. “I do have items in the store room but they are all one-offs.”

Chad was born and bred in Hawke’s Bay and loves the area. Gardening was her profession but with a “broken body” she looked to put her skills in another direction,

“I love gardening and I love old things so combining the two was easy,” she said. “And off course I love flowers so most of the items in the shop have flowers on them.

“After all who doesn’t love flowers — the scent of them, the fact that every year they come back, They are just beautiful.” It is the couple’s first venture into retail business and they are thoroughly enjoying it.

“I’m really enjoying the interaction with customers and watching the delight as they discover something special. When you take something home from here it’s getting its third or fourth lease on life. It’s giving pleasure to another owner and that’s really nice.”

Beside Tumu Timbers in Havelock North, in the old bakery, The Garden Shop is a delight.

There are flowers everywhere you look, in frames, in books and on and in jugs and vases. If you decide to buy something that is full of flowers you get to take them home as well. There are also planters that will add instant interest to any garden. This shop is different.

The Garden Shop is open through spring and summer from Wednesday to Sunday, 10.30am to 4.30pm. There’s plenty of off-road parking.
