NZ landscapes inspire artist

- BY BRENDA VOWDEN brenda.vowden@nzme.co.nz

Although most of Jo Fisher’s art is overseas, the subject of her paintings is very much rooted in New Zealand.

Jo’s latest exhibition, showing at Gannet Safaris Overland in Te Awanga, depicts the landscapes of her surroundings. However, it all began with horses.

“I have always drawn, mostly horses when very young, to the point that one of my aunts said, ‘Joanna, if you draw another horse, I will refuse to read the letter’.”

Jo says she always draws before painting — “I love doing both.”

Although not a fulltime artist, she is now semi-retired, so able to devote more hours to her craft. She says inspiration comes from all around.

“My inspiration comes from my surroundings, my wanderings in New Zealand and beauty anywhere, including people and animals. I am always grateful to be a New Zealander and live in this amazing and very beautiful place.”

Jo says her paintings begin with a degree of nervousness, with the painting taking over as the work changes with progress.

“Painting is escapism, but if things don’t quite work, painting is frustration and hard work. I am a disciplined worker, especially with commissions. Commissions are a joy as they are requested areas and often in unique places that are possibly inaccessible for the general public.”

Although her paintings are for sale, she does find it hard to part with some of her work.

“Some paintings I do find difficult to sell. I have one of Wanaka in my collection that I really don’t want to sell.”
