Leaping to big success
The crew at Hastings-based cheerleading club Cheer Dynamix continues to jump to new heights, bringing home one first, one second, three thirds and a fourth from their recent trip to the NZCU Cheerleading Nationals, held in Auckland last month.
“Our senior Level Two team placed fourth and our senior Level Four team placed first taking out the national title,” says Cheer Dynamix owner and choreographer Claire D’Ath.
Teams competed once on the first day for 30 per cent of their final score and then again on the second day for 70 per cent of their total score, bringing the medal tally for the year’s competitions to 11 gold, nine silver and 11 bronze.
There were about 750 athletes competing in teams, and 200 in ‘specialties’, Claire says. The club sent their two senior teams and six specialty items from approximately 50 athletes now enrolled at Cheer Dynamix. They have attended a total of nine competitions nationally and internationally since opening their doors two years ago and boast a medal tally of 15 gold, 13 silver and 13 bronze, including being placed fourth at the American Showcase in Anaheim, Los Angeles and winning the Superior Team award. And none of that came about by chance.
“We train year-round for competitions as the competition season runs from about June to October. All the athletes were super proud of their efforts. After all their hard work and training, it was awesome to be rewarded for their hard work,” Claire says.
The club is now in wind-down mode, but will be straight back into training in January, with new skills and routines being designed for next year’s competitions.
