Hat-tricks lead to win for Waihi

- By BRENT WILLOUGHBY

Hat-tricks from Richard James and Vincent Fransham helped Waihi to an 8-4 win over Hamilton Wanderers last Monday.

Waihi dominated the early passages of play and went 2-0 up through James and Jarrod Irving.

However, Wanderers came back into the match 20 minutes in when central defender Alan Burfoot brought down a Wanderers’ striker in the box.

Burfoot was red-carded and Wanderers scored the resulting penalty to make the score 2-1. Going down to 10 men didn’t slow Waihi down though, and another four were scored before the half to bring the score to 6-2 at the break.

The second half was less fluent as Waihi began to sit back and Hamilton Wanderers looked more threatening.

Waihi was limited to counter attacks and added only two further goals as the scoring was shared.

The first came through James when he headed home a cross from Raiden Maurirere and the second through Fransham to bring the final score to 8-4.

The win was another important result for Waihi as the team chases first place on the table.

Man of the match was midfielder Ryusei Nishida.

In other College matches, the 1st XI played in Hamilton against Boys’ High’s 3rds and lost 2-1.

Key players were missing due to injury, leaving only two reserves on the bench. They currently sit fourth in the Waikato 2nd division, with a won 3, drawn 1, lost 4 record.

Next Saturday they play at home at 10am, and will need to lift against HBHS’s Yr11 Development side.

The Girls 1st XI lost 7-0 to Thames High, and currently sit 3rd in the Waikato 3rd Division with a won 4, lost 4 record.

Next Saturday they travel to Rototuna for a top of the table clash with the undefeated league leaders.

The College Boys Colts team demolished St Peter’s Colts 4-1, in a classy display at Waihi College.

This team is a class act, with calm controlled passing through the midfield being a feature of their play. Goals were scored by Mason Mouat, Jack Matich, Reegan Green and Jayden Purcell.

The team settled early into good positive football, pressing from the start and showing the opposition they wanted to take the game to them.

They showed some really good fluent football, stringing together some magic passages of play and the goals reflected that.

Captain Hamish Brown had a great performance and deserved the man of the match award. Thanks to Jason Urlich for refereeing and the many supporters who turned up.

The Colts have another home fixture next Saturday, also at 10am, against one of the many HBHS teams in this league!

The year 7 and 8 team defeated Aquinas College 8-4, in a game that was far closer than the score would suggest. In their hardest game of the season, goals were scored by Dylan Steele(5) and Dan Oliver (3). These young men also are playing at home next Saturday, hoping to maintain their unbeaten record in competition games this season.
