Waihi Drama needs talent

-

The people of Waihi had always got behind the war effort, and they have the chance to do so again this weekend when the Waihi Drama Society holds auditions for a trio of plays set during World War I.

“We really wanted to be a part of the upcoming centenary of Armistice Day”, says president Fi Gudsell. “But we wanted to focus on the ordinary people of the time — each who found themselves in an extraordinary situation.”

The first play, Fighting the Kaiser with Catapults by S.J. Edwards follows three family groups who must decide how they will spend the war. Jaun Fisher will direct. Cast requirements are five younger people (three male, two female, and four of an older generation (one male, three female).

The second, Over The Top by Geoff Parker, features two soldiers who decided to enlist and are just minutes from facing a major assault. Linda Haines is looking for two younger men to take on this short but surprising piece.

The third play is much better known. Written by JM Barrie of Peter Pan fame, the film adaptation starred legendary actor Gary Cooper. Other acting greats such as Douglas Fairbanks Jnr and John Barrymore, starred in radio adaptations. The Old Lady Shows Her Medals manages to be both mischievous and moving, and is sure to be a crowd favourite. Tracey Carter directs and is looking for four mature women (including one of dubious moral character), a Scotsman, ideally in his 30s or 40s, a priest and a narrator.

“The plays are short so there’s fewer lines to learn and less rehearsal time needed,” says Fi. “So if anyone’s thought about giving theatre a go, this a great opportunity to try it out. And we always have room for people to lend a hand with set-building, publicity, prop-making, costuming, make-up, even cakebaking! Onstage or offstage we’d love to see you the auditions.”

■ The plays will debut on Armistice Day, November 11. Scripts from Fi by texting or phoning 027 810 273 or emailing pres@waihidrama.co.nz
