Are we beautiful?

-

I read with interest Melanie’s article on the ‘Most Beautiful Small Town Award’ in the Waihi Leader last week.

It got me thinking this little town must be in the running because of the exquisite presentation of public land, specifically the State Highway 25/ Kenny Street entrance and the Council’s grass verge. Take a look for yourselves, the photos are attached. Realism joins the curb-less road as it tries to share its space with the Council’s showpiece efforts at maintenance and beautification. Perhaps more iconic than the Rocketpark rainbow, it’s become famous-ish, at least to the patient residents in Waihi East.

I’ve been here two years and it’s clear the road verges were presented like this a long time before I got here.

I wonder if the senior I saw last Saturday with his mobility aid walking up the 70km road because he couldn’t use the footpath will be voting for Waihi in the ‘ Most Beautiful Small Town Award’. Ask him, he might have a few words to say.

Real people live out this way. The type that pays their rates and rent, contributing to some other part of Waihi’s Council upkeep because it obviously isn’t being spent here.

Thought you might be interested. When the small town award judges call in for a look they better be wearing their rose-tinted glasses cause it’s not hard to miss what I see every day of the year. STEPHEN H. Kenny Street resident, Waihi
