Shake Out Day is on today

-

Be prepared for today’s Shake Out, the international earthquake drill and tsunami hı¯koi day.

The event is held across the world as a reminder for people to follow Civil Defence’s recommended practice in case of a disaster.

New Zealand Shake Out is starting at 9.30am.

‘Drop, Cover and Hold’ for 30 to 60 seconds is the action to take for an earthquake and evacuate to safer ground is the direction to follow in case of a tsunami.

Civil Defence says it is safer not to move during an earthquake and follow instructions:

■ DROP down on your hands and knees. This protects you from falling but lets you move if you need to.

■ COVER your head and neck (or your entire body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk (if it is within a few steps of you).

■ HOLD on to your shelter (or your position to protect your head and neck) until the shaking stops. If the shaking shifts your shelter around, move with it.

If you are unable to drop, brace yourself in a chair or wheelchair (lock your wheels) and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms. If you are unable to get out of bed, cover your head and neck with a pillow.

The event also aims for people to be better protected against disasters by planning ahead: having an emergency survival kit handy with items to survive for at least three days after.

Packing non perishable food, at least three litres/ person a day of water, large rubbish bags, toilet paper, face and dust masks, torches, spare batteries, blankets/sleeping bags, pet supplies, waterproof.wind proof clothing and a first aid kit.

A getaway kit is also crucial in case of a quick evacuation. Items to pack are similar to the survival kits with the addition of important identification documents — birth and marriage certificates, driver’s licences and passports, financial documents — insurance policies and mortgage information and family photos.

More than 600,000 New Zealanders have already signed up to take part in this year’s National Earthquake Drill and Tsunami Hı¯koi.

The Drop, Cover, Hold steps can be done at home, work or school on the day.
