Hetherington House resident marks century
Doreen Single had a double celebration for her 100th birthday at Hetherington House.
Staff cut the cake and gave Doreen flowers to mark this milestone date on Friday, October 12, along with some family members.
More family returned on Sunday for an afternoon tea with Doreen.
Born in Wellington on the October 14, 1918, Doreen is one of three children, and her 94-year-old younger sister was with her on the day to help her celebrate.
Doreen was brought up on a farm in Matiere with her two sisters.
She married Leslie on July 25, 1942 and they went on to have eight children.
“Sadly Leslie (Ike) passed away 40 years ago and tragically a daughter was lost in a car accident,” Doreen’s family said.
“Doreen is a great mother and very clever with her hands, doing beautiful knitting, crochet, tapestry, cake icing and sewing.
“She also made her daughter’s wedding dresses,” they said.
Doreen and Ike moved to Waihi in 1966 with their family, and later Doreen went to live with her daughter Pat and son-inlaw Phil where she lived for 26 years before moving to Hetherington House.
Having lost her sight over the last 10 years it became necessary for her to move to Hetherington House in 2016 where she has 24-hour care.
Doreen family-oriented, and loves being surrounded by her family — and especially her cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren.
