Centennial programme in Waihi

Waihi will commemorat­e Armistice Day with a three-day event starting tomorrow .

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 9

Young People’s Day

■ 1pm at the Cornish Pumphouse: Rememberin­g our Past. Looking to the Future.

Starting on the grassy slope next to the rangatira statue, participan­ts will then walk past the Poppy Fence to the pit rim for a dedication of the Peace Wings.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 10

They Also Serve — Women in World War I

■ 1pm: Tunnelling Company handembroi­dered and quilted cloak dedication and blessing at Waihi Memorial Hall.

Waihi Ward Councillor Anne Marie Spicer will MC this event. Listen to stories from overseas and close to home. Hear the soldier’s view of the women’s story. The Tunnelling Company cloak designed and created by Krishna Buckman and the Waihi Embroidery and Quilters groups will be dedicated.

■ 6pm: Dinner and Dance at Waihi RSA.

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 11

Armistice Day — Lest We Forget

■ 6am: Pipers at dawn, Tunnellers’ Memorial, Gilmour Reserve.

■ 8.15am: Peace Train leaves from Waihi Railway Station.

■ 9am: Peace Train leaves from Waikino Railway Station.

■ 9.30am: Morning Tea at the Waihi RSA.

■ 10.30am: Church Service, Waihi Memorial RSA.

■ 11am: Armistice Day Service. Church bell tolls 11 times. Two minutes’ silence begins the Waihi Memorial RSA service.

■ 11.30am: Parade with Roaring Chorus to Waihi Memorial Hall (Waihi RSA).

■ 12pm: Waihi Remembers, Waihi Memorial Hall. Reading of the Roll of Honour, guest speaker Dame Margaret Bazley. Community stories.

■ After 12pm: Waihi Lions project Poppy Fence’s named poppies returned to descendant­s in the Hall.

■ After 12pm: Memorial Hall 60th birthday cake and refreshmen­ts provided by the Lions.
