Break for Cansurf

- By CARMEN HALL news@waihileader.co.nz

Teenagers from all over the North Island who are affected by cancer will converge on Waihi this weekend for two days of fun, laughter and activities.

CanSurf Summer Camp Waihi Beach provides a special experience for Canteen, the peer support network for young people living with cancer.

CanSurf trustee Seugnet Towee says about 50 supporters and helpers from Canteen, aged 13 to 17 will attend the camp.

“It gives young people living with the effects of cancer to have some time out, doing something different, being challenged, spending time with others in the same situation and making close friends. It also gives our community of Waihi and Waihi Beach the chance to get involved and give back while showing off our beautiful home and our generous spirit.”

The camp is the only one of its type in New Zealand and young people are coming from all over the North Island, including the East Cape, Rotorua, Bay of Plenty and Waikato.

During the weekend they’re kept busy with an agenda that encouraged networking and trying out different experiences.

“The young people will have surf lessons, go on HarleyDavidson motorbike rides, visit our Fire Brigade, do yoga and beach games.

“They will also participate in team building and motivating exercise. The group always leaves touched by the community’s spirit.”

Pervious camp participants had reiterated those sentiments and Seugnet says without fail the feedback they receive is incredible.

“Lives are touched and changed and there is a lot of self discovery.”
