■ INDOOR BOWLS

Waimata Indoor Bowls - August 27 Club night. With a number of players away we only had four teams on Tuesday night with Peter Youngman and Keith Wright winning with three wins, Betty Thomas and Don Moir the runners up with two wins and the team taking the chocolate home were Keith Prier and Shirley Taylor. A fun night.

Waihi Beach Indoor Bowls - August 29 The ladies singles playoff between Ethel Dench and Joan Gill was won by Ethel by one point. A very tight game and congratula­tions to both winner and runner – up. The club member splayed triples, runners up being Kevin Boothby, Terry Wren and Queenie Van de Ven. Winners were Gail Boothby, Hilton Bruning and Marilyn Roberts.

Waihi Golf report - August 29 Women’s golf—18 holes

The weather was partly cloudy—a reasonable day on August 24 for Houston Cup Putting third round, and Bay of Plenty Stableford competitio­ns. Stableford results: Michelle Libby, Bev Ireland, Niria Gerbich 33 points; Jenny Wilson, Karen Roche 31; Jackie Robson, Carol Leary, Gay Bainbridge 30. Hidden Holes: Jackie Robson 8 points.

At last! At decent day to play golf on August 28, and this was reflected in the many good scores returned in the Bay of Plenty Stableford, and Houston Cup Putting third round competitio­ns. There were some hairraisin­g tales of balls repeatedly rolling down the hill from the fourth green, emphasisin­g the fact that if the ball was not hit well onto the green, you were in serious trouble. On August 26 if they weren't drowned by heavy rain in the first part of their game, there was every chance of being blown off the course before the day was out, yet most of these not-getting-any-younger golfers persisted and carried on to the end of their games, many of them playing first round handicap Championsh­ip matches.

Not only did the sun finally come out on August 27, but also plenty of players, bringing with them a much happier attitude and enthusiasm for the game.

On August 29 there was a good field supporting the Cancer Society's charity tournament, organised by Katikati Lions in conjunctio­n with Waihi Golf Club, raising just under $900.

Prizes were awarded for best gross and best nett scores over the field, and all other prizes stableford.

Last weeks darts had yet another play off to find our winners and runners up. Eventually it was Tom Snedden and Louisa Duckmanton taking the win.

Runners up went to Tim Reed and Jenni Orbel-Proctor. Men's highest score went to Dave Papesch 180, and for the ladies Jenni 101.

Thursday singles: 12 players this week - first Graham Stewart 170 points, runner-up Tom Vorstman 150 points, third Ian Heriot 95 points, highest break Jimmy Ewing 22.
