■ INDOOR BOWLS

Waihi Beach RSA Indoor Bowls

Club — Septembr 1

A small but enthusiastic gathering at their club night. The teams of pairs alternated their playing positions after each game. This meant the leads were able to play skip positions and control the game.

Winners on the night were Brian Warren and Pete Morrison. The triers prize went to John Williams and Nelsy Jordan. Waimata Indoor Bowls - September 3

Despite the weather turning on strong winds and torrential rain, eight members turned up to play their weekly bowls. Pairs was the order of the night with Diane Paulsen and Shirley Taylor winning over Peter Youngman and Anne Richards.

Waihi Golf report - September 4

Club Matchplay Championships

It was a day out of the box on September 1—perfect weather for one of the most important days of the Club year— Club Matchplay Championships. The Senior Men's match between Alistair Cochrane and Lincoln Drent was first on the tee at 8:00am, in what was going to be a battle of the giants—Alistair hoping for his 10th win and Lincoln for his fifth. At the half-way mark after 18 holes, the match was all square, but Lincoln, fresh after not having played for six weeks, surged ahead in the second half to win on the 12th hole.

At 8.10am the intermediate match over 36 holes between Murray Gutry and Phil Trevenen: at 18 holes Murray was two holes up, and in a very close match he managed to get the better of Philip to win four holes up. Well done.

Richard Taitoko played Tim Parish in the Junior A Men's final and after 18 holes was six up. Although Tim played his usual steady golf, Richard was on fire, his lead was too great, and he finished the game ten holes up with nine to play.

In the match between John Purkis and Mike Rose in the Junior B Men's match—John was four up after eleven holes; Mike fought back to all square on the 17th hole, and then it was all in the putting—John sunk his, and Mike didn't. A great match.

Women: Due to a family bereavement, the Ladies Silver Division match between Carol Leary and Michelle Libby has been deferred to a later date.

In the Ladies 36-hole Bronze 1 match between Jacquie Bain and Avon Gordon, Avon set the pace early with her amazing putting skills. On record, they both should have been evenly matched, but with a six-hole lead after 18 holes, Avon had her foot on the accelerator and was never going to ease the pressure, relentlessly giving Jacquie little opportunity to claw her way back, and by the way her putts were dropping, the lead was too great to overcome. The match was over, seven holes up and six to play. As a matter of interest, this 80-year old marvel last won the trophy in 2001!

The Bronze 2 Ladies 18-hole match between Gay Bainbridge and Jenny Gallaugher was a battle between two very determined players.

Both were equal at the turn, neither player giving an inch, battling on to finish all square on the 18th. Both had good tee shots on the 19th, then Jenny duffed her second; Gay was on the green for three, and holding her nerve, with two putts won the match one up. Well done.

Nine Hole Section . Ladies Division 1: Lorraine Meyer b Glen Bennet three holes up and two to play.

Ladies Division 2: Carole Hambleton b Mandy Piper four holes up and three to play.

Men: Clyde Smith b Peter Madsen four holes up and three to play.

The field of 27 players donned their woollie hats and numerous layers of wet weather and managed to get back to the clubhouse before the serious wind and rain arrived.
