Time to have your say — mayor

- By REBECCA MAUGER news@waihileader.co.nz

John Tregidga hangs up his hat the moment the clock hits midday on October 12.

His time as mayor is up.

That clock strike also symbolises “time’s up” for voting day across the Hauraki district.

Soon registered voters will be receiving those familiar orange prepaid voting envelopes in the mail.

That’s the signal for electors to make some decisions and post voting documents back to the electoral officer before the October 12 deadline.

John would like to remind people to vote.

“My message to the district at this time is to remember that the people sitting at your council table are making decisions that will have an influence on your life.

“We’re incredibly lucky to live in such an open democracy, so it’s really important that you make the most of that opportunity and cast your vote.”

After 36 years in local government and 15 years as mayor, he says it’s time for someone new to wear the mayoral chains.

He feels privileged to be leaving a job he has “thoroughly enjoyed and to know that I’m leaving it in good heart”.

“I’ve been lucky to have had the support of an outstanding group of councillors during my time as Mayor, and I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved for the Hauraki District.”

The council has worked well together “no matter what our beliefs” which is unique in local government, he says.

“That doesn’t mean we’ve agreed on everything, but it does mean that at the end of a robust debate we’ve been able to put our differences aside, continue to respect each other, and understand the value diverse views and different perspectives bring to decision-making.”
