Two major events on one day in Paeroa

- Rebecca Mauger

The people of Paeroa will be getting bang for their buck with two major events on the same day this weekend.

Rotary Paeroa’s Vintage and Classic Car show is on during the day and is topped off by the annual Paeroa Fireworks Display in the evening — both on Halloween.

Club secretary Richard Hornell says it’ll be a huge day in Paeroa “with the Lions and Rotary putting two of Hauraki’s largest events”.

“Get your fill of classic cars followed by an evening of great entertainment at the largest fireworks display in Waikato.”

Last year they set off more fireworks than ever and they’re planning to do the same.

Local entertainment includes Paeroa Central School’s kapa haka group, the L&P Rockers and Anna Tukuitoga. More acts are being confirmed.

The Paeroa Fireworks Display has been run by Paeroa Lions for 27 years. Before then, it was run by Paeroa Jaycees. The event has been going for more than 40 years, making it one of the longest-running displays in New Zealand.

The club always holds the event on the last Saturday before fireworks go on sale. Crowds around the 4000 mark come to the event held in Paeroa Domain.

The night helps to raise money to fund various community projects such as school starter packs and the walkway around Primrose Hill. Organisers are including a special Halloween costume competition with prizes for the best-dressed at the fireworks display.
