Advocate tidies up recycling message

Change follows confusion over soft and rigid plastics

-

Jude Zurcher and the team at Agrisea are Paeroa good sorts when it comes to recycling plastics.

Jude is a great advocate for recycling, active on social media and in her community and a caring member of her Paeroa community.

When Jude noticed an anomaly between the Hauraki District Council’s plastics recycling message on its Facebook page, and what she was putting in her recycling bin, she brought it to the council’s attention — and the council say it’s glad she did.

Jude came across some soft plastic marked No 2 with the recycling logo. Being passionate about recycling properly, she popped it in her recycling wheelie bin, only for her bin to be stickered by our auditor and not emptied.

“Because of her great input on one of our Facebook posts, we’ve updated our message around our plastic collection. We can confirm that we collect rigid plastics 1 and 2 only, not soft plastics, regardless of the number on the soft plastic,” says Mayor Toby Adams.

Since only rigid plastics numbered 1 and 2 are collected in the Hauraki district, Jude wanted to make sure her community was aware of the difference.

“Recycling is important to me and I wanted to make sure everyone understood the difference between the rigid and soft plastics, because it caught me out,” she said.

“Now I put this No 2-marked soft plastic in the soft plastic bin outside Countdown in Paeroa.”

Agrisea sponsor the soft plastics collection bin outside the supermarket in town.

Mayor Adams said this was a great initiative and an example of communities working together.

“This is a brilliant example of working with the community to get the best results.”
