WAIHI COLLEGE

HELPING TO FEED THE COMMUNITY

-

As most of you know, Waihi College is fortunate enough to receive a free school lunch for every student each day of the week through the Free School Lunches programme. Our amazing Libelle staff are provided enough ingredients to make 613 lunches. Currently due to COVID, we have far less kids at school and a lot of these ingredients go unused. Thanks to the forethought of Michelle Pullen, our Canteen Manager; Siobhan Fitzgerald, our hospitality teacher; and Tracy Te Wake, our staff Well Being Leader, these ingredients are now being turned into meals for our community. Last Thursday we created nearly 200 meals which were assembled by student and staff volunteers and packaged into foil containers. They could be put in the freezer for eating another time, or heated up for dinner that night. We made chicken and cheese tortilla wraps and a delicious pasta bake. Since then we’ve also made up spiced chicken with rice and a pork and pumpkin curry.

Thanks to Pravin at 100% Electrical in

Waihi, we received a huge freezer at a great price and can freeze as many meals as we can make, then get them out to the community via Tracy Te Wake, the

Baptist Church and the Salvation Army.

Such a great team effort and such a positive thing for our community. Not only does it feed those who need it during these tough times, but it prevents environmental damage due to food waste. The extra bonus is that it’s an amazing feeling for our kids and staff to be involved in something that is helping so many.
