Groups hop to it as plans can be made

Next summer likely to be a busy one

-

It wasn’t the hop — but many classic car owners got behind the wheel on what would have been a bluebird weekend for the traditional week of Repco Beach Hop.

Changes to the traffic light settings for outdoor events announced by the Government kicked in at 11pm on Friday, March 25.

“While it isn’t going to have much of an impact for any indoor events or hospitality venues, it will definitely allow our event organisers to start their planning for the 2022/2023 event season,” says District Events Coordinator Kirstin Richmond.

October will see the start of the event season with the new date for the Whitianga Marathon, now taking place on October 15.

Steampunk the Thames — Circuspunk November 10-13 and Beach Hop 2022 will take place on November 23-27 , with their Thames day out on November 24.

A new date has been set for the 2023 Whitianga Summer Concert, this will now be held over Waitangi weekend, February 5. An announcement on the line-up is expected soon.

If you are looking for a mid-winter event, the Whangamata¯ Wild Womens’ weekend is on May 13-15, 2022, see their website for further details, wildwomensweekend.co.nz

“We are currently working with event organisers who are busy planning their events for summer, there are some new events on the horizon so it is looking like a busy event season for the whole of the district,” Kirstin says.

The council’s major event fund has been reduced from $50,000 to $35,000 which has been used for this financial year to support a resource consent for the Thames Racecourse.

“This has been successful with a three-year consent granted, which will allow us to work with the Thames Jockey Club and look for large-scale events for this site,” says Kirstin.
