SUNDAY 17TH APRIL 2022 Kauri Walk to Dickey Flat

Enjoy the beautiful settings along the Dean and Mangakino Pack tracks to where the Mangakino Stream and Waitawheta River converge. River (writhing serpent) Finish with ‘billy tea’, a sausage and marshmallo­ws to toast over the fire.

Orokawa Trig Walk

The Orokawa Trig site offers expansive views across the Bay of Plenty and down to beautiful Orokawa Beach. Rich in history, the walk starts by criss crossing the stunning Waihi Beach Stream track, past waterfalls and up a steep bank to join the Fire Break track. From there we make our way to the stile over the fence, through a bit of farmland and then out to the Orokawa Trig.

Sentinel Rock Walk

Difficulty: Grade 4-5

We proceed along the Tuahu track, which is a well-formed track thanks to DOC who have done some recent upgrading work resulting from the Kauri dieback threat. After around 25 minutes we reach a section of board walk around a huge Kauri.

After taking that in, we follow a well signed track to our left to Sentinel Rock Lookout.

Waihi Beach Trig Glowworm Walk Difficulty: Grade: 3

Join us near sunset for a short trek up to the

Waihi Beach Trig where we will watch the sun set over our 9km stretch of paradise. Once darkness has fallen resident bat, glow worms and maybe even a morepork or two may appear.

Night Time in the Bush

Difficulty: Grade 1

Adventure for the little people as we make our way into the forest as the stars and night creatures come out. We will follow the Upper Domain Track and look for titiwai (glow worms) and ruru (morepork). Bring a torch.

Walk through Martha Mine Pit Fence Difficulty: Grade 2

Oceanagold is offering a walk inside the Martha mine pit fence, around our perimeter road. Get views of the Martha mine like never before. We will stop off and take a look at some of our local Waihi icons, exiting on the north-western side of the pit rim. We will then return via the popular Pit Rim Walkway, back to the car park.

Butlers Track

Difficulty: Grade 3

Join us to explore this track that once gave access between Paeroa and Waihi for both horse and bullock teams. From the Karangahak­e School carpark we head up the steep track that eventually levels out and exposes wonderful views of the Karangahak­e Gorge road a long way below. Not for those with a fear of heights.

Waiorongom­ai Wander

Difficulty: Grade 2

Join in this leisurely walk around Waiorongom­ai Low Level Loop and learn about the history and flora of this old goldmining area. With mining relics, regenerati­ng bush and a few small streams, this valley is one of the North Island’s best kept secrets.

The Discovery Mine and Short Loop Track Difficulty: Grade: 4

Car Park at the Top of Pacific Road, Waihi Beach

Cost: Donation

Passing the site of the Discovery Mine, we will learn about this little known early mining venture at Waihi Beach, before continuing up the Waihi Beach Stream. We cross the stream a few times, and then continue past waterfalls.

A 10 minute ascent leads to views over the Orokawa Reserve before returning via the Reservoir-old Firebreak Track. A great walk for fit kids!

Tuahu Kauri Loop

Difficulty: Grade 1

Nearest Town: Katikati • Registrati­on Region: Katikati Duration: 1 – 1.5 hours

A magnificen­t kauri tree is a stunning feature of this walk. The kauri is known as Tuahu, named after its location on an old Maori route that was used as a bridle path in the 1890s. A side track will lead us to a platform surroundin­g us with BOP’S oldest Kauri.

Wires Track Loop

Discover the remnants of the Waihi Beach section of the Old Wires Track as it came via Waihi Beach and connected telegraphi­c communicat­ion between Auckland and Wellington. The track follows a ridge behind the old dam with lots to see on the way, including a beautiful stand of Rewarewa Trees.

Tui Domain Track Waterfall Walk

Difficulty: Grade 2

Slightly uphill, this walk will take you along the gentle Tui Domain Track on Mt Te Aroha. A 10 minute detour takes you to Tutumangao Falls. Continue on towards Tui Rd where a side track leads to another waterfall and the Mayflower Mine. Return the same way for a soak in the hot pools

Dubbo 96 Track Loop Walk

From the Karangahak­e Gorge carpark we cross the first swing bridge and then take the upper right hand trail to the Scotsman Gully track before heading left on the country road on a gradual climb for around 1km. The Dubbo 96 track branches off the County Road/no 7 Level track.

Historic Shortland Wharf & Historic Sites Walk Difficulty: Grade 1

The walk will commence at the historic Shortland wharf (in use continuous­ly since 1867) and will include the wharf itself, and numerous historic sites in the vicinity, including first Methodist church service (1867), first European cemetery in Thames, early railway infrastruc­ture (c. 1890s), Shortland Sawmilling Co mill and Stone’s Boatyard sites, Shortland Hotel
