Family fun and space galore lives just outside Whangamata

- By Jo Ferris

The road between Waihi and Whangamata is well travelled. It’s a picturesque drive that weaves through countryside by coastal settlements before arriving at Whangamata. Just outside the township, on Waihi Whangamata Road, this small enclave is probably rarely noticed. It’s a discreet neighbourhood – elevated from the road – with a handful of homes hiding behind a thick fringe of trees and shrubs.

Among them is this charming property – a sun-drenched family home, set within 7220 square metres of playground lawns, gardens and trees. Designed around the sun and outdoor flow, this home streams with natural light and sun – particularly at this time of the year with sun lower in the sky. Family living revolves around it. A well-appointed kitchen takes a back seat to allow the dining setting in its bay-window alcove take full advantage of the sun. Family living is also closely linked with the kitchen and breakfast bar, but doors open for time outdoors in the sun. A paved patio with pergola framing is the perfect spot for the alfresco setting and loungers. String the lights up for night-time glow, light the brazier and toast the peace as the birds head to the trees and stop their chatter.

A separate lounge gives private space for TV time, while four bedrooms cater for a large family. There’s additional room outside for teens to escape to their own haunt.

It’s a huge, high-stud shed and lends to a myriad of uses. Tinker with classic vehicles ready for Whantamata’s annual Beach Hop? A workshop for business? Storage for the boat? A gym? This is a multipurpose asset. The house already has an internal double garage, so parking is a major feature of this property.

This is a playground and fruit bowl all in one. Numerous fruit trees, an olive grove, raised garden beds – heaps of room for more veges and herbs – and vast lawns for the trampoline, and open spaces for the dogs and kids.

Complete with a bore, water tank and garden shed. “This property has something for everyone in the family. Room for a pool perhaps? Probably.

The kids will want to check out the tiki Hut in the top corner of the section.

While enjoying plenty of space around the house, neighbours are close by to enjoy weekend barbecues, and it is only a short drive from Whangamata for friends and family to join you.

This is a lifestyle with a capital ‘L’
