Golf day a big hit for St John

Annual tourney raises funds for charities

-

On the third of November the annual Whangamata¯ Ray White Charity Golf Day supporting Ronald Mcdonald House, The Coromandel Rescue Helicopter Trust and St John took place at Whangamata¯ Golf Club’s Ti Toki Course.

The course had been under water only a couple of days before and the greenkeepers did a fantastic job of getting us into a position to be able to play. There were a couple of people suggesting that the rain would miss us, but it didn’t!

Due to course conditions, a slightly shortened format was played and almost all the pre-registered teams turned up to play and support the three charities.

The day started with all of the 26 teams enjoying a barbecue sausage, mussel fritters, and some warming refreshments. After a welcome speech and a breakdown of the rules of the day the teams headed out for a 12 midday tee-off.

The drizzle started shortly afterwards, and the rain started in earnest about an hour later and got heavier and heavier. Despite this, most of the teams continued and even though it was wet, nearly everyone had a smile on their faces and some great golf was played.

At around 3.30pm, the players made their way back into the clubhouse where an auction was held to help raise some more funds for the very worthy causes.

Awesome prizes such as a signed

Kane Williamson shirt, Queenstown golf escape, Whitianga Lad’s getaway, Ladies Pamper pack, a fridge, and many other items were all put to the room and auctioned off to the highest bidder.

The day was a resounding success with over $26,500 being raised for the charities.

The annual Ray White Charity Golf Day continues to go from strength to strength with incredible support from local and national businesses and golf clubs. It could not be done without their support.
