Ulysses raises money for cyclone
Ulysses Waihi-thames Valley ICONS 150 ride raised over $2100 for Cyclone Gabrielle victims
Forty-five motorcyclists and passengers enjoyed a tour of some of the Hauraki and Thames-coromandel districts’ sights last month on the recent Ulysses Waihi-thames Valley ICONS 150 ride, raising over $2100 for Cyclone Gabrielle victims.
The Ulysses Club of New Zealand’s only caveat for membership is for riders to be over 40, and have a keen interest in motorcycles.
The club supports camaraderie, and organises via their network of chapters or branches throughout the country, and they currently boast over 2000 members.
Their slogan is “Growing Old Disgracefully”.
For the ICONS 150 ride, which takes on a treasure hunt format, a sunny day meant that both the competitive and tour groups enjoyed 150km of pleasant riding along a number of the area’s less-travelled roads.
“We were pleased with the level of support that we received from our local motorcycling community, as well as our two district councils and many local businesses, including Hauraki
RSA Ngatea, Hauraki Plains Motors Ngatea, Central Motors Ngatea, Moto 1 Paeroa, Harcourts Whangamata¯ and Bike Rider Magazine,” said branch coordinator Chris Brown.
Brown added that he believed that the funds raised by the Waihi-thames Valley group were greater than most other Ulysses branches, including those of the main centres.
“A lot of hard work went into organising and running the event, and I thank everyone for lending a hand on the day to ensure it was a success.”
With the success of the ICONS 150, Brown said that the club was looking into the possibility of running further fundraising rides in the future to support local community groups.
