Summer conditions provided some great scoring for the Waihi Golf Club, except for one section. With heavy rain forecast, the week’s club play for the Vets Section was cancelled.

However, the Pennants teams travelled to Te Aroha for the first round of their competition, where the rain was falling for a fairly damp round.

With their knowledge of their home course, Te Aroha took the early lead, but the Waihi Nuggets were second, just 11 shots off, while the Waihi Quartz were well placed in third position.

The highlight for the Waih¯ı players was that Allen Sarjant had a gross 74, which is one shot better than his age. This was the first time he had achieved this milestone.

In the Nine Hole Section’s net haggle, Tina Berg and Glen Bennett would have topped the round, but the competition of the day was putting. Therefore, the day’s winner was Margaret Meldrum, who only had 16 putts for her nine holes.

She just sneaked in ahead of John Twemlow, Jan Ferguson, Lynda Thomson, Helen Brady, Glen Bennett and Tu Tangiia, who all finished on 17 putts.

There was some good scoring in the Wednesday Ladies Stableford haggle last week.

The top scorer with 42 points was Jenny Gallaugher, with Jan Robinson close behind with 40 points. Next was Sarah Tomsett with 38, then Raewyn Wright and Sharlene Stewart with 37.

Annette Hetherington and Jenny O’dwyer both had 36 points. Jenny O’dwyer won the hidden holes with nine points. The Dreamers Player of the Week was Annette Hetherington for her fine 66 net.

It was perfect playing conditions for the Thursday Men’s day haggles.

In the Morning Haggle, it proved to be a golden day for John Drent, who was a clear winner of the haggle (and the hidden hole) with 43 points, ahead of Tom Rowbotham with 40.

John Giffney was next with 39, while Willie Lynch, Rob Page, and Norm Sanderson all had 37. Peter Wright and Brian Robinson both had 36 points.

In the Afternoon Haggle, the scoring was again hot, but Bill Young proved the hottest with 43 points.

He was just ahead of Nigel Sanderson with 42, and Pete Spiers on 41. Trevor Coombes and David Campbell both had 40 points with Jonathan Clare next on 38. Peter Dagg and Michael Hurley both finished with 37 points.

With the continuing dry conditions giving plenty of run, the registering of impressive scoring continued on Saturday.

The Saturday Ladies scramble this week was Stableford and out in front with a great 43 points was Desley Rosevear, but close behind with 41 points were Sharon Deacon and Karen May.

Next was Bev Ireland on 37, while Liz Seager, of Nga¯hinapo¯uri, Denise Morgan and Megan Jowsey all had 36 points. Jenny Tubman and Karen May shared the hidden hole with eight points.

The Morning Men haggle Division 1 was dominated by Sam Gurney with 43 points, followed by Jim Powell with 39. Daryll Denyer and Allen Sarjant both had 38 points, with Earl Hoskins having 37.

In Division 2, Francis Gascoigne and Ken Purcell both had 40 points with Eddie Bruce next on 39. Rodger Bagshaw had 38, with Rhys Margan 37 and Tom Rowbothan 36. After Allen Sarjant beat his age on Monday, Ken Purcell achieved the feat in this haggle.

It was a tight competition for top honours for the Afternoon Men.

Wayne Green and Michael Matutinovich were at the top with 41 points. Next were David Campbell and Paul Morgan with 39, then Rex Knight, David Oliver and Murray Fraser all with 38. Chris Spiers and Rob Page had 37, while Dwayne O’flaherty and Charles Gurr finished with 36 points.
