Quirky charm on full site combines potential and recreation

While some might look to Whangamata’s main coastal ribbon for that dream lifestyle; golfers will probably have a different point of view. Not that the beach isn’t far from this home. The Williamson, nine-hole golf course just happens to be closer right over the back fence.

With the beach and surf lifesaving club only a few blocks away, this is the best of both worlds. The home has been in the same family for 65 years. Steeped in history, it stands proudly different – a unique quartz stone wall fencing and column features giving the property landmark distinction.

Bayleys’ Gordon Mcgregor and Dale Sholson say the home was built by a skilled joiner and boasts a legacy of craftsmanship and memories. It personifies Whangamata’s original beach bach lifestyle, with a Crete influence – simple, cosy and lifestyle revolving around outdoor spaces and barbecue gatherings.

It’s one of this home’s biggest features – random paving and a pergola shelter setting the tone of this ‘outdoor’ room with its built-in feature outdoor fire. Countless family stories and laughter have occurred out here over the years. Best of all, the adjoining ‘bloke’s shed’ is a gem – a haunt for tall fishy tales as the day’s catch is filleted on the stainless bench over a cold beer.

This entire area is the backyard playground and an extension of the home – ample room on the lawn for the kids and dogs to romp around; parking for the boat and campers all year round; plus tents in the summer when the spill-overs arrive.

The house bears all the elements of its era – retro flair showcasing the kitchens of old, polished flooring and bold colour maintaining the vibe. It’s a short preview – two bedrooms, openplan living, bathroom and laundry next door. The main bedroom slips outside to invite a morning coffee, while deciding the day’s activity.

Big decisions about the future of this property will also need to be made. Boasting a full site at around 809 square metres (more or less), Gordon and Dale point out the obvious.

“Leave as is, add on further living space or perhaps look to remove and build your dream home.”

There’s another thought, however. As a lock and leave holiday home, it also offers investment thoughts for Airbnb – particularly given the home’s quirky persona.

Either way, the result will be determined come auction time next month. This property is set for auction in Hamilton on April 4 – unless it’s sold prior, of course. Whangamata’s summer rush might be over. But eyes are definitely back on property – as several recent sales by Gordon and Dale have shown.

This promises to be just as interesting.
