Hauraki-Coromandel Post

A big warm welcome to those on the Hop in our region

- Scott Simpson

Whether it’s the classic cars cruising around the peninsula or the countless people dressed up for the occasion, our towns really come alive in support of Beach Hop.

This iconic event is a constant drawcard for our region and I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all our visitors who have made the trip.

I hope you enjoy your extended weekend of revelling in the very best of 1950s, 60s, 70s culture.

You’ll notice that the Coromandel is particularly beautiful this time of year, so take your time and explore some of our hidden gems.

A huge shoutout to Noddy Watts and his dedicated team of volunteers. They are constantly working behind the scenes to ensure everyone can relax and enjoy themselves.

No matter what challenge comes up, they are ready and able to overcome it.

In other news, I have been working closely with the Minister of Conservation Tama Potaka on Cathedral Cove and I’m pleased he has provided a commitment that the track will reopen.

The minister wants the track ready before this coming summer season and has instructed the Department of Conservation to put an action plan on his desk before the end of June. This is terrific news for our communities, because it provides certainty for local tourist operators and other businesses. Not only can they plan for a summer season with the track open, but also visitors who want to walk to this world-renowned attraction can add it back to their itineraries. Restoring walking access to Cathedral Cove is essential for our region and I’ll be following developments closely.
