WAIHI GOLF
Waihi Vets was held on Monday and Tuesday last week. This popular tournament attracted a field of 80 players, with visitors competing from 16 other clubs. On Monday early drizzle thankfully cleared away to a fine day, but some heavy overnight and morning rain on Tuesday changed the conditions, with the summer run all but being eliminated, and the scores being subsequently lower. The tournament was played in three divisions, and thanks to the sponsors and the generosity of many local businesses an impressive prize table was on offer. The overall top players were for the men Alex Standfield with a total nett of 144, while the best Lady was Rachel Yoo (Paeroa) with 140 nett. In Division One Nett, Alex
Standfield was first, with Daryll Denyer R/u. Division Two, Rachel Yoo (Paeroa) 1st, Denise Morgan R/u. Division Three, Adrienne Lynch 1st, Sharon Deacon R/u. The Stableford results were, Division One, Anke Hermannsdorfer 1st, Allen Smith R/u. Division Two, Kaylene Crocker 1st, Baxter Fagan (Taupo) R/u. Division Three, Barbara Handley (Tieke) 1st, Eddie Bruce R/u.
WEDNESDAY LADIES: It was a nett haggle for the Ladies this week. With the best score was Rosalind Giffney with a very creditable 68 nett, while in second place (with her 3rd round in 3 days!) was Helen Baynes with a nett 70. Sarah Tomsett and Jacquie Bain both had 71, then Shelly Lithgow with 73. Heather Watters won the Hidden Hole competition with 9 points. THURSDAY MEN: A poor weather outlook and dark clouds scared off all but 6 players in the morning. A better more normal field played in the afternoon, and only had to endure a few showers. The clear winner of the haggle was visitor Baxter Fagan from Taupo with the only score above average of 38 points. next were Kelly Exelby and Murray Gutry with 34, and then Daryll Denyer, Graeme Culton and Norm Kelly (Riversdale Beach) with 33. Twos were recorded by Chris Pilmer on the 6th, and Mike Matutinovich on hole 13 (presently he has a love affair with the 13th!). SATURDAY COMPETITIONS:
After a stormy 24 hours previously, Saturday started fine, but breezy, but turned to cold showers as the day wore on.
LADIES: Played a stableford haggle where Megan Jowsey had the best score of 36 points, just ahead of Phillipa Harvey with 35, and Desley Rosevear 34. Denise Morgan and Susan Mustard both had 33 points. Jackie Robson, Desley Rosevear, and Susan Mustard shared the Hidden Hole with 7 points each. MORNING MEN: The morning haggle was contested in 2 divisions, In Division One it was a tight battle with Peter Smith, Don Mackay, Tim Parish, and Mark Tomsett all scoring 34 points. While with 33 points were Allen Smith, Des Crene, and Dean Tetley. In Division Two, Charles Gurr had the round of the morning with 38 points, with Jim Evans, Peter Hewitt, and Mark Mora next with 35 points. Doug Ferguson and Norm Sanderson both finished on 34 points. Peter Smith had the only two. AFTERNOON MEN: There was some better scoring in the afternoon haggle with Brian Roche topping the day with 41 points. Next was John Taylor with 39, then Eddie Evans 38, while Craig Sandlant and Brian Doherty both had 37 points.
Terry Gerbich and Gary Morrison both finished with 36. Alister Cochrane and Chris Pilmer both had 2s on hole 15.
