A reminder to lock cars
Police are asking car owners to take a simple step towards protecting against thefts - lock the car.
A spate of thefts from vehicles in Papamoa, near Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty has officer in charge of Papamoa Police Sergeant Tristan Murray sounding a warning.
‘‘You have a lock on your car for a reason so make sure you use it and prevent yourself becoming a victim of crime,’’ Murray said.
A number of people in Papamoa seem averse to locking their cars recently, he said.
‘‘At least 15 vehicles in the Papamoa East area, both on the road and in driveways of properties, were targeted over the weekend.’’
None of the vehicles had been locked.
‘‘It doesn’t matter where you are parked, your car can always be targeted by opportunistic thieves,’’ he said.
Police will continue to focus on vehicle crime and encourage anyone whose car had been entered over the weekend to call Papamoa Police on 07 572 2440.
People in the Hauraki Coromandel should also keep an eye out.
Suspicious behaviour should be reported to 111.
