Hauraki Herald - - YOUR LOCAL NEWS -

I’m an animal lover, and have grown up with cats and dogs being valued and much-adored members of the family.

Early childhood memories always feature the family dog - my parents are fans of Labradors - and they were all so well loved and cared for - each of them truly part of the family.

I had to fight back the tears yesterday when a press release landed in my inbox, listing the most abhorrent cases of animal cruelty and neglect.

The SPCA List of Shame is a shocking and heartbreaking read - it highlights 11 of the most shameful cases of animal cruelty in 2017. The list includes a five year old Lab starved to death, a duck with its beak blown up by a firecracker and a neglected horse left in pain with a deformed eye. How can people behave so badly and be so cruel? It disgusts me - and I don’t understand it.

We can all do our bit to protect animals at risk. Donations for this year’s SPCA Annual Appeal can be made to street collectors from March 9 to March 11. I know I’ll be digging deep.
