Ducks in training for annual race day
Two thousand rubber ducks will take to the water on Sunday May 15, all hoping to set a quacking pace in the 8th Annual Havelock North Duck Race. The Karamu stream at Crosses Road bridge will be the scene of a demanding course set up by ‘Papa Lloyd and his duck team’ on behalf of Havelock North Central Kindergarten.
Butch Castles, from Hawke’s Bay Racing, will be giving a running commentary of the actual race while Martin and Sarah from The Hits will be there to watch the ducks racing and encourage the punters.
These highly-trained rubber ducks will be swimming to win their “owners” prizes donated by local businesses, which include a three course lunch from The Farm at Cape Kidnappers, a David Trubridge ‘coral’ pendant light, OLA Pacifica chocolate, vouchers from Hutchinsons, restaurants and more.
This community event is to support the kindergarten in completing finish stage two of its outdoor environment. There will also be stalls, an Oooby (out of our own backyard) stand, cake stall, face painting, kids’ games, bouncy castle, Hawthorne coffee, sausage sizzle and Kerry’s delicious pulled pork buns.
Buy a ticket to adopt one of the numbered ducks for $5 from aHavelock North Central Kindergarten family, online at www.duckrace.net.nz or in the Village on May 14. Wardinis bookshop and Hawthornes Coffee Roastery also have tickets to sell. Every ticket receives a free McDonald’s sundae from Hastings, Havelock North or Taradale.
