Ducks in train­ing for an­nual race day

Two thou­sand rub­ber ducks will take to the wa­ter on Sun­day May 15, all hop­ing to set a quack­ing pace in the 8th An­nual Have­lock North Duck Race. The Karamu stream at Crosses Road bridge will be the scene of a de­mand­ing course set up by ‘Papa Lloyd and his duck team’ on be­half of Have­lock North Cen­tral Kinder­garten.

Butch Cas­tles, from Hawke’s Bay Rac­ing, will be giv­ing a run­ning com­men­tary of the ac­tual race while Martin and Sarah from The Hits will be there to watch the ducks rac­ing and en­cour­age the pun­ters.

These highly-trained rub­ber ducks will be swim­ming to win their “own­ers” prizes do­nated by lo­cal busi­nesses, which in­clude a three course lunch from The Farm at Cape Kid­nap­pers, a David Trubridge ‘co­ral’ pen­dant light, OLA Paci­fica choco­late, vouch­ers from Hutchin­sons, restau­rants and more.

This com­mu­nity event is to sup­port the kinder­garten in com­plet­ing fin­ish stage two of its out­door en­vi­ron­ment. There will also be stalls, an Oooby (out of our own backyard) stand, cake stall, face paint­ing, kids’ games, bouncy cas­tle, Hawthorne cof­fee, sausage siz­zle and Kerry’s de­li­cious pulled pork buns.

Buy a ticket to adopt one of the num­bered ducks for $5 from aHave­lock North Cen­tral Kinder­garten fam­ily, on­line at www.duck­race.net.nz or in the Vil­lage on May 14. War­di­nis book­shop and Hawthornes Cof­fee Roast­ery also have tick­ets to sell. Ev­ery ticket re­ceives a free McDon­ald’s sun­dae from Hast­ings, Have­lock North or Taradale.
