Comedian Pio Terei is guest speaker for parents of Havelock North schoolchildren.

The free event, at the Havelock North Baptist Church on September 4, is open to all and hosted by Havelock North Intermediate, Te Mata School, Havelock North Intermediate and Lucknow School.

The schools have banded together to secure speakers with an interest and expertise in supporting parents.

“Parenting today has more than its share of challenges,” Te Mata School deputy principal Heather Wilkie said.

“Navigating the minefield of friendships, use of media, and the emotional change from childhood to adolescence are just a few of the challenges all parents face.

“Add to that stressful jobs, a lack of family support, limited time and demands on our finances can have the potential to cause conflict in the home,” she said.

“Often school is a place where these challenges intersect, with parents and teachers working together to manage these.

“Some of these challenges manifest at school and ripple out into the community, or conversely what is happening in the home has an effect in the playground.”

Last week UK educational consultant Jenny Mosley spoke at the Havelock North Community Centre.

“She was very well received and parents left with many simple yet effective strategies to build self-esteem respect and resilience.

“Our next guest speaker is comedian, actor, radio show host, musician and performer, Pio Terei.”

Pio volunteers his services to the national organisation The Parenting Place, which has a range of programmes to support families.

“Pio presents a fun, informative presentation that enables people to soak up information in a comfortable non-threatening environment,” Ms Wilkie said.

“Pio’s talk will particularly focus on the challenges parents face as our children move through to adolescence.”

Pio will be talking at the Havelock North Baptist Church, Middle Road Havelock North on Tuesday September 4 from 7.30pm to 9pm.

Tickets are available from participating schools and a gold coin donation would be appreciated. All are welcome, for more information contact Heather Wilkie at Te Mata Primary School.
