Flavours pass taste test
If you are looking for a bit of indulgent decadence to treat yourself or a friend, look no further.
Rush Munro’s new organic icecream ticks all the boxes. First and most importantly, it is absolutely delicious, secondly, its quality is top notch with all ingredients organic, and thirdly it was people like you and me who had the final say in the flavour range.
The small Hawke’s Bay based company is owned by John Bostock who is also New Zealand’s largest organic apple producer. General manager Vaughan Currie, who has been with the company for 18 months, says they came up with 14 flavours. They then had them taste tested but instead of using a team of icecream experts they asked, among others, friends, family and employees to taste.
Six flavours were picked, Dark Chocolate Orange, Scorched Almond, Mochaccino, Strawberry and Coconut, Feijoa, Ginger and Almond.
Vaughan brought the six flavours into the Hawke’s Bay Today Hastings office.
There was a lot of “yum” and “try this one” and finally “this is my favourite” going on as staff sampled the icecream.
My favourite was the Mochaccino. If you like your coffee strong you are going to love this. The Ginger Kiss got quite a few votes. There are some texture surprises that make the experience even more enjoyable.
“For every flavour we have to have the right organic credentials. The regulations around organic certification are very strict in New Zealand,” Vaughan said.
“So we are sourcing whole organic scorched almonds, chocolate and ginger biscuits and then cutting them by hand and we make our coffee extract from scratch. We also batch churn the icecream in small runs so much of the production is done by hand with little machinery. Everything is very artisan and not mass produced so a real labour of love,” he said.
The entire process has taken just under two years and the team at Rush Munro’s are proud of the result.
The range comes in 457ml and 100ml tubs and are available in supermarkets — and don’t worry, you can still get your Rush Munro’s Malted milk from 704 Heretaunga St W, St Leonards, Hastings.
