Romeo and Juliet with a twist
There is a new theatre production company in Napier and they are going to unleash their first play this weekend.
Out of the Box Napier will be performing Romeo and Juliet this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, at the Kitchen Table on Tennyson Street, starting at 7pm.
It tells the old tale using Shakespeare’s dialogue but set in modern times. It differs from other versions because there are set dance pieces peppered throughout the 11⁄ hour performance.
This is due to the influence of Colenso College’s dance teacher Leah Kersey who has used a unique and sensual flow in the dance pieces which fit perfectly into the play’s dramatic structures. Using contemporary songs heightens the dark journey that the young lovers must take.
Co-director Perez Mackay, who recently acted in The Great Gatsby, has brought his valuable experience to the play. Kersey and Mackay wanted the play to be different from traditional theatre by doing things like including the audience and using specific colour palettes. The Kitchen Table’s stage and theatre space adds to the experience.
Some of the young actors come from Colenso College and the older ones have experience from television’s Xena to the upcoming Mamma Mia! shows.
