Community groups get grants

- CHRISTINE MCKAY

With $22,00 available to fund local organisations, the Dannevirke Community Board received requests for $17,054.57 at this week’s meeting.

The Dannevirke Basketball Association received the $855 they requested to help pay for the hire of the Sports Centre and while the Dannevirke and Districts Home Budgeting Service had requested $5000 for operational costs it was granted $2500.

The Dannevirke Gallery of History, Friends of Epiphany and the iHow Charitable Trust received

the $3500, $930 and $160 they requested respectively.

The Gallery of History is an annual request which the community board was happy to grant in full as they rely on donations to keep them going. The Friends of the Epiphany will use their $930 to install a kitchen bench within the Ormondville Church.

The community board also agreed to pay $160 to iHow for a camera for photo ID for driver’s licences.

Although the Raumati Hall Committee had asked for $3220 for painting their hall and toilet, they received $1500. The community board had previously contributed

$2000 to the first stage of the project.

“The quote of $3330 to paint the hall is quite high,” community board chairman Ross Macdonald said, while approving $1500.

Dannevirke’s St Vincent de Paul Society spends $1500 a year disposing of waste items unsuitable for sale in their shop and requested

$760 which was approved.

Two applications were left on the table until the next meeting to allow Mr Macdonald to meet with the organisations and discuss them further.

One was the Tararua Addiction Support Network which requested $$780 for an operational grant.

“They do fantastic stuff and recently have helped up to seven people,” community board member Terry Hynes said.

The second was a request from Tararua Community Youth Services for $1859.57 for iPhones and iPads.

The grants approved at the meeting came to $10,195.
